April 30, 2017 – Completed Art Projects!

April 30, 2017 at 7:51 pm (acrylic painting, Art, Markers, painting) (, , , , , )

I’ve finally gotten around to finishing (and starting) some of my art projects this weekend! The first one to display is a Van Gogh reproduction I’ve been working on (on and off) for a while: Wheat Field with Cypress. I used alcohol-based marker on smooth bristol, and it was my first actual piece using marker (outside of a couple tests).

Next, I finished a painting I had started a while ago and gave up on. I essentially went back and brought it up to a spot where I didn’t want to touch it anymore; I’m not happy with it either way, but it’s in a state of completion now. Acrylic on canvas.

Lastly, I started and finished a painting that I’m a little on the fence on. I like some elements of it, but I don’t know how I feel overall. I likely could have done a bit better on the composition of it as well as the detail work in some areas. Acrylic on canvas.

Painting: Five Birch Trees

April 11, 2017 at 10:00 pm (acrylic painting, Art, painting, Rant) (, , )

I’ve finally gotten some time to paint again. I ended up psyching myself out and getting frustrated with a couple paintings several months ago, and never really made it back. I decided to ease into it with a very small 5″ by 7″ masonite board piece. I only spent a short while on it, but I wanted to get the feel for painting again. Here’s what I came up with:

Field and Stream

January 21, 2017 at 10:52 pm (acrylic painting, Art, painting) (, , , )

I just finished my next painting; it’s acrylic on an 8″x8″ canvas. I picked this image to paint because it had an interesting composition and I wanted to try something with it. Unfortunately, I did not achieve anything of what I wanted with this one, but it was a step in the right direction. I learned a fair bit during this one and reworked the colour a couple times, but ultimately it was not as cool-feeling and isolated as I had hoped for. Also, this is the second piece I since I started using Liquitex Heavy Body for parts of it. I’m still figuring out the ins and outs of them, but they seem to dry out much faster than my Liquitex Basics series paints.

Field and Barn

I’ve just completed my first painting of 2017; it’s acrylic on an 8″x10″ canvas. I’m still deciding how happy I am with it, but I tried a number of different things with this one. Here’s a picture of it:

Some more paintings from my week off

November 27, 2016 at 5:36 pm (acrylic painting, Art, Colored Pencils, painting) (, , , , , , , , )

Here are some more paintings I worked on during my week between jobs. The following is a brief description of each:

Deep Tractor Ruts: This was my first attempt at using a gel medium. The photo doesn’t show it, but the tractor ruts are actually textured. 8″x10″.

Flower in Watercolour: This was my first usage of watercolour pencils. I wanted to give them a try, so I picked a copyright-free image of a flower to use.

Sunlit Woodland Path: This was a quick painting I did to play with more expressive styles. 8″x10″.

Autumn Birch Trees

November 19, 2016 at 3:37 pm (Art, painting) (, , , )

I recently completed a larger painting of a photo I found online (free license). I finished half of it and liked where it was going, but I’m not really happy with how it ended up. It’s acrylic on 9″x12″ canvas.

Afternoon Projects

October 1, 2016 at 4:44 pm (Art, painting) (, , , , )

I had some coffee this morning and then was itching to do something productive, specifically something art-related. I ended up doing almost 3 full pieces (acrylics on 8×10″ canvas). I used a couple YouTube tutorials for the first two to get in the mood for the style I wanted to play with and then did the third as an original based on a photo I took in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Niagara Falls Painting

September 27, 2016 at 1:27 pm (Art, painting) (, , , )

I recently finished an 8″x11″ piece of the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. It’s done in acrylic paint on canvas. My first finished piece of this size and the first use of my new easel. I don’t think the colours really look great in this photo, but it was just taken quickly using my phone in non-ideal lighting.

Salt and Pepper

August 20, 2016 at 5:09 pm (Art, painting) (, , )

I recently cleared out some of the stuff I was working on that was taking most of my attention. I wanted to get back into painting but wanted something small and quick to work on. This piece was done on 6″ by 6″ acrylic paper based on a photo I took.

Painting: Roughly Autumn

June 2, 2016 at 10:34 am (Art, painting) (, , , , )

Here’s one of my paintings from last month. I used an existing painting to get a better idea for subject matter. It’s acrylic paint on a 10″ x 10″ canvas.
